Just a little correction to number 8: Versailles was built from about the 1660ies, Marie Antoinette was born in 1755. The dollhouse would therefore be at least a 17th century dollhouse if not even an 18th century one according to some of the furniture displayed.

I've recently gotten into making dioramas and more intricate displays for dolls, and not choosing to use dolls at all could be for plenty of reasons. Realistic looking doll houses (not made of plastic) are often far too small a scale for things readily available like Barbies, and the things you'd find at that scale are less poseable and often painted incorrectly due to how easy it is to mess up at that scale. I'd also say they can block the view, and it can be difficult to find a doll matching the quality and theme of the pieces you're using. It's also a lot more 'immersive' in a sense, if dolls aren't there. I often feel like I could teleport straight into those intricate little book nooks when I see them.

This is so fascinating! Have you heard for the nutshell studies? They were dollhouse/ dioramas of murder scenes made by Frances Glessner Lee. They were made to help teach police to look for forensic evidence and still used as a training tool now!

I didn’t always think that dolls were creepy, But I never liked them. I never liked those baby type of dolls and while I did have a few Barbies, I never put dolls in my doll house. I think it takes away the possibility within a doll house. If you have a doll standing at the stove cooking, that’s all she’s doing. She’s not moving around (at least hopefully not), but there’s nothing else happening. She’s just standing there. She’s not racing back-and-forth from the fridge to the stove to the sink and grabbing something out of a drawer unless you are making her do that. To me it’s always just felt like it takes away possibility and creativity to have actual dolls in the house. Clowns, on the other hand… They’re just purely terrifying😂 For that I believe Stephen King and my older sister for letting me read IT at aanapparently way ttoo influential age 😱

Personally, I just can't find any 1:12 scale dolls I like. They're all either too fake looking, or not articulated enough, or if they do look good and can be moved, I can't afford them because they are actual works of art. What I wouldn't give for a 1:12 scale Barbie.. haha Doll movies, horror movies, in general have never really bothered me. I can't remember if I've ever had a movie give me nightmares. I had many nightmares, once upon a time, but never because of a movie that I recall.

It's not just the movies, we have old horror books talking about dolls and automates in the xix century.

i recently bought some fake ones (white rabbits) to make a custom and they look just like the originals, they came dressed as bride and groom, so yeah you can definetely find some really cute ones
